Rhinoplasty for Fort Lauderdale and Miami Residents
A rhinoplasty, commonly called a “nose job,” is among the top five types of cosmetic surgery performed in the United States. Some need the procedure to correct a medical problem, such as a deviated septum. Others choose to undergo rhinoplasty to reshape the nose for cosmetic reasons. Dr. Blane Shatkin performs rhinoplasty procedures on both types of patients, from the comfort of his Weston office. With extensive experience performing rhinoplasty on patients from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and other areas of Florida, Dr. Shatkin is known as a reputable plastic surgeon serving the southern Florida area.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
The manner in which the rhinoplasty procedure is performed can vary depending on the goals of the individual patient.
When removing a nasal bump, Dr. Shatkin folds back the skin and files down the excess bone that forms the bump. To shorten the nose, a portion of the bone is sculpted down. To reshape the nose, excess pieces of cartilage are removed to provide a more pleasing shape. This technique is used to narrow or widen the bridge of the nose or the nostrils, to make the tip sharper or more rounded, and to help the entire nose appear more symmetrical.
When the bone and cartilage dividing the nostrils (“septum”) is crooked, it can block the flow of air and cause breathing problems, snoring and even sinus infection. Rhinoplasty to correct a deviated septum is technically called a septoplasty. During surgery, Dr. Shatkin straightens the septum out.
Rhinoplasty Candidates
Medical conditions that may require nose surgery include a deviated septum, broken nose, and chronic sinusitis.
More often however, people get a rhinoplasty because they are dissatisfied with the way their noses look. They have bumps on the bridge, the tip is too bulbous or the nose is too long.
